Sinossi

In the focus program, we put the spotlight on the young filmmaking of a selected country and work together with internationally renowned film festivals.
This year, the two programs «Heartbeat of Japan» and «Whispers Seem Enigmatic» give us exciting insights into young Japanese filmmaking.
«Whispers Seem Enigmatic» was curated by the Pia Film Festival (PFF) and shows us stories about coming of age with a focus on female voices.

«The Pia Film Festival (PFF) has been introducing young talent since 1977. Over the years, PFF has witnessed changes in the film landscape: while the 20th century saw the rise of predominantly male directors from university film clubs, the 21st century has seen the emergence of dedicated film schools, many of whose students are women.
PFF’s competition has no restrictions on length, genre, or gender, so I focused on selecting films where the directors expressed their voices with creativity and originality.

Except for Major Tom, an internationally acclaimed bittersweet coming-of-age story, the other four were directed by women. In a society where women's voices are often overlooked, I hope you’ll notice how each director integrated their voice into their film—from the gentle storytelling of The Story of My Meat Life to the minimalist style of Somewhere Not Here, the intentionally awkward drawn animation Tulip-chan, and the excellent acting in Exposure.»
